A Soldier Sortie...

The next exciting instalment from Statue Park is upon us! For those of you that don’t know what I’m going on about see this post. Alas, I can’t find out through the website who or what these statues represent, but they do feature three blokes stood proudly to attention in a communist stylee – check out the huge thighs on them as well. Massive! I love the look of seriousness on Rich (above) and Laura’s faces as they stand to attention, although I guess you would have to look that way if you were a communist soldier.

A great imitation, and there are plenty more to come from this most fantastic park in the weeks ahead…

The Hungarian Fighters’ In the Spanish Inter-National Brigades Memorial
(Agamemnon Makrisz, 1968, Bronze Disc, 2.8m)
The civil democratic revolution succeeded in Spain in 1931 and the Republic was proclaimed. Armed revolt against the democratically elected Peoples’ Front Government broke out under the leadership of Francisco Franco and his followers. The army took the side of Franco, who received significant support from Germany and Italy who were both looking for a test of strength with the looming war in mind. The Spanish Peoples’ Front Government was in trouble and turned to the World for support. In response volunteers from more than 60 nations arrived including 1200 Hungarians, and were formed into so-called International Brigades, who offered armed support to the legitimate government, which was at that time being supported by the Soviet Union.
In spite of this assistance Franco’s forces were ultimately victorious in the civil war in 1939.On the side of this memorial are the names of Spanish cities made famous during the course of the civil war.

(My disclaimer - this came from the guide-book rather than my personal views; although not a lot looks to erroneous)
